At a glance

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly prescription injection for weight management in adults, made by Eli Lilly and licensed by the MHRA in the UK. It acts on two gut hormone receptors simultaneously — GIP and GLP-1 — helping you feel fuller more quickly, significantly reducing appetite, and slowing digestion. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants at the highest dose lost an average of 20.9% of their body weight over 72 weeks — more than any other currently licensed weight-loss medication in the UK. It is available via private prescription and, for those who qualify, through NHS specialist services.

Before buying Mounjaro online, check the real price

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, so the pharmacy or prescribing service matters just as much as the price. Before ordering, check that the provider is appropriately registered, requires a proper consultation and clearly explains the total cost.

Why many patients use Monj

Monj is one of the most widely recognised independent Mounjaro price resources in UK patient communities. It was built to help people compare prices across many providers without relying on paid advertising, sponsored rankings or hidden pharmacy bias.

Monj focuses on showing the full picture: dose-by-dose pricing, consultation charges, delivery costs, discount terms, stock notes and provider checks where available. This makes it easier to compare the real treatment cost rather than being pulled in by a low headline price that changes at checkout.

Monj also takes pharmacy validation seriously. The platform is built around careful provider checking, registration review and ongoing monitoring. Where provider information changes, listings may be reviewed again rather than left online unchecked. This helps keep the resource more cautious, transparent and useful for patients.

The project is designed as a public-interest pricing and safety resource. Monj has become trusted in patient communities because it gives users a clearer way to compare providers without selling advertising space to push one company above another. Monj is also community-led in its outlook, with a focus on public-interest guidance, patient safety and giving back where possible.

Why patients use Monj to compare Mounjaro prices

  • Independent Mounjaro price comparison
  • Broad UK provider coverage
  • GPhC pharmacy information considered
  • Dose-by-dose pricing
  • Consultation and delivery costs highlighted
  • No paid pharmacy ranking
  • Ongoing provider checks and validation
  • Built for patient communities, not pharmacy advertising

Why this matters when buying Mounjaro online

Buying Mounjaro online can be confusing because two providers may advertise similar headline prices but charge different amounts once consultation, delivery, dose and discount restrictions are included. Monj helps users compare the real-world cost more clearly.

  • Is the provider linked to an appropriate registered pharmacy or prescribing service?
  • Is a proper consultation required before supply?
  • Is the dose clearly shown?
  • Does the price include consultation and delivery?
  • Are discount terms clear?
  • Is there a clear refund, cancellation or contact route?
  • Does the website explain who is responsible for prescribing and dispensing?

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly prescription-only injection for weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related health condition. It is manufactured by Eli Lilly and received MHRA approval for use in the UK in 2023.

You may have seen dramatic headlines about Mounjaro — "wonder drug", "obesity revolution", and so on. The clinical reality is genuinely impressive, but more measured than the press might suggest. Mounjaro is the most effective licensed pharmaceutical option for weight management currently available in the UK — but it is a tool that works best alongside meaningful changes to eating and activity, not a replacement for them.

Perhaps more importantly: Mounjaro is not about aesthetics or standards of beauty. It is a medical treatment for a complex, chronic condition. For many people, it provides physiological support that makes sustainable dietary and lifestyle changes genuinely achievable for the first time. Many people tell us this feels like an enormous relief. If that's where you are, we want you to know — you're not alone, and there's nothing to be ashamed of in seeking treatment for a medical condition.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro's distinct mechanism is what separates it from earlier weight-loss medications. It is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist — it activates two gut hormone pathways simultaneously.

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonism

GLP-1 is a hormone released by your gut after eating. It signals to your brain that you're full, slows gastric emptying, and helps regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release. This is the same pathway targeted by Wegovy (semaglutide) and Ozempic.

GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptor agonism

GIP is a second gut hormone involved in insulin secretion, fat metabolism, and appetite regulation. Activating GIP alongside GLP-1 appears to produce a greater combined effect on weight loss — which is thought to be a key reason why Mounjaro typically outperforms semaglutide in clinical comparisons.

In practice, most people on Mounjaro describe a reduction in "food noise" — the persistent, intrusive thoughts about eating that many people with obesity experience and which no amount of willpower is designed to overcome. Many describe it as the first time food hasn't been a constant mental presence.

We hear this from so many people across the UK, and we want to acknowledge what it means emotionally. If you've spent years being told your weight was a willpower problem, the shift that many people experience on Mounjaro can feel genuinely profound. That's valid, and it's worth naming.

What results can I realistically expect?

The landmark clinical programme is SURMOUNT, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Key results from SURMOUNT-1:

DoseAvg weight loss (%)Avg weight lost (kg)Participants losing ≥20%
5mg/week15.0%~15.4 kg32%
10mg/week19.5%~20.0 kg50%
15mg/week20.9%~21.8 kg57%
Placebo (+ lifestyle)3.1%~3.2 kg3%

Source: Jastreboff AM et al., NEJM 2022 (SURMOUNT-1). Duration: 72 weeks. All participants followed a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity alongside medication. These are averages — individual results vary significantly.

A note on what "results" means

Even if you don't reach the clinical trial averages, losing 5–10% of body weight carries clinically significant health benefits — including meaningful reductions in blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, joint strain, and sleep apnoea severity. Progress that doesn't match a headline statistic is still real progress, and it matters. Compare Mounjaro and Wegovy results →

Side effects — an honest overview

We want to give you a genuinely honest picture here. Most people on Mounjaro experience some side effects, particularly in the first weeks or when increasing dose. Most are manageable. Knowing about them in advance makes them considerably less alarming when they occur.

Very common (affecting more than 1 in 10 people)

  • Nausea — the most commonly reported side effect, particularly on starting or increasing dose. Usually improves significantly within 2–4 weeks at a given dose. Eating smaller amounts and avoiding fatty foods helps.
  • Diarrhoea — often in the first few weeks. Staying well hydrated is important.
  • Constipation — some people experience this rather than diarrhoea, as gastric emptying slows. Fibre and fluids help.
  • Vomiting — less common than nausea. Contact your prescriber if severe or persistent.
  • Reduced appetite — technically the therapeutic effect, but ensure you're still consuming adequate protein.

Common but often under-discussed

  • Sulphur burps — the rotten-egg belching that many people find socially mortifying. More commonly reported in real-world use than in clinical trials. Manageable with dietary changes. Our full sulphur burps guide →
  • Fatigue — often related to calorie reduction rather than the medication itself. Usually temporary.
  • Hair shedding — very commonly attributed to Mounjaro, but almost certainly caused by rapid weight loss itself (telogen effluvium), not the drug directly. Typically resolves in 3–6 months. Our hair loss guide →

When to seek urgent medical attention

Stop Mounjaro immediately and seek urgent medical advice if you experience: severe persistent abdominal pain (possible pancreatitis); signs of a severe allergic reaction (facial swelling, difficulty breathing); vision changes; or severe upper right abdominal pain (possible gallbladder issue). Always read the full patient information leaflet supplied with your medication.

Our complete side effects hub covers every reported side effect in depth, with evidence-based management strategies. Dedicated guides for nausea, sulphur burps, hair loss, and constipation.

Dosing and titration schedule

Mounjaro is always started at the lowest dose and increased gradually. This is called titration. Going slowly significantly reduces side effect severity — please don't rush it.

PhaseWeekly doseMinimum durationNotes
Initiation2.5mg4 weeksAdjustment only — not for weight loss. Do not skip.
Therapeutic 15mg4+ weeksFirst therapeutic dose. Appetite changes often noticed here.
Therapeutic 27.5mg4+ weeksIncrease only if previous dose well tolerated.
Therapeutic 310mg4+ weeksMany people find an effective level here.
Therapeutic 412.5mg4+ weeks

You do not need to reach 15mg to benefit significantly from Mounjaro. Many people achieve excellent and sustainable weight loss at 5mg or 7.5mg. There is no failure in staying at a dose that suits you. See our full titration schedule guide and KwikPen clicks chart.

How to use the Mounjaro KwikPen

Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled single-use auto-injector pen. It is injected once weekly under the skin (subcutaneously) into the abdomen, upper thigh, or outer upper arm. Most people who were anxious about injecting tell us the first time was much easier than they expected.

In brief: clean skin → remove cap → press firmly at 90° → hold for 10 seconds after click → dispose in sharps bin. See our illustrated step-by-step injection guide for full detail including injection site rotation.

Who is Mounjaro suitable for?

Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for adults with a BMI of 30+ (obesity), or BMI 27–29.9 with at least one weight-related health condition (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease).

A proper medical assessment by a registered prescriber is always required. Mounjaro is generally not suitable for people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy; have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2; have a history of pancreatitis; or are under 18.

Type 2 diabetes and Mounjaro

Mounjaro is also licensed for treating type 2 diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes and take insulin or sulphonylureas, your prescriber will need to review your diabetes treatment carefully to reduce hypoglycaemia risk.

NHS access in 2025

Mounjaro received NICE approval (TA1026) for NHS specialist weight-management services in 2023. Access through NHS GPs remains very limited due to phased funding implementation. Most NHS access is through Tier 3 specialist services, requiring a GP referral, BMI 35+ (or 30+ with comorbidities), and evidence of a structured lifestyle programme. A "postcode lottery" applies — provision varies significantly by Integrated Care Board.

Our complete NHS access guide covers eligibility in detail, how to talk to your GP, and what to do if NHS access isn't yet available in your area.

Real experiences from across the UK

"The nausea in weeks two and three was genuinely quite bad, and I honestly wondered whether I'd stick with it. My prescriber said to sit tight and it would settle. She was right. By week six I barely noticed it, and the difference in my appetite was remarkable. Three and a half stone in seven months. I feel as though I've got my life back."

"Nobody warned me about the sulphur burps. Finding SlimBee's guide about it at two in the morning, slightly horrified by myself, genuinely made me laugh — and made me feel much better about what was happening. The diet tips helped within a couple of days. Six months on, down 23kg. Feeling fantastic."

Frequently asked questions

Most people notice appetite reduction within the first 1–2 weeks. Meaningful weight loss typically becomes apparent from weeks 4–8. The 2.5mg starter dose is for adjustment only and won't produce significant weight loss on its own — the therapeutic effect begins from 5mg.

Alcohol isn't contraindicated with Mounjaro, but many people find their tolerance changes significantly — feeling effects much more quickly on smaller amounts. Alcohol can also worsen GI side effects. Being cautious, especially early in treatment, is sensible. Full guide to Mounjaro and alcohol →

If fewer than 4 days have passed since your missed injection day: take it as soon as you remember, then resume your normal weekly schedule. If more than 4 days have passed: skip the missed dose and resume on your next usual injection day. Never take two doses in the same week. When uncertain, contact your prescriber.

Unopened pens should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (away from the cooling element). Once you've started a pen or have removed it from the fridge, it can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 21 days. Never freeze Mounjaro — a pen that has been frozen should be discarded. Full travel and storage guide →

The honest answer is: yes, significant weight regain is common after stopping, because the appetite-suppressing effects end. This is a feature of the biology of obesity — not a personal failing. It's why thinking about the transition plan well before you stop matters enormously. Our guide to coming off Mounjaro →

No — they are different medications. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide (dual GIP/GLP-1), made by Eli Lilly. Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide (GLP-1 only), made by Novo Nordisk. Our Mounjaro vs Wegovy comparison →
